March 11, 2008, Nanaimo, BC – The Vancouver Island Economic Alliance held its first annual general meeting March 7, 2008 in Nanaimo British Columbia.

 

VIEA (Vancouver Island Economic Alliance) launched early in 2007 has seen tremendous growth in membership and as an organization. Stated outgoing chairman Mike Hunter:”as a business driven organization we are committed to action and to ensuring our Island is investment ready.”

 

One of the highlights in the past year is the partnership between The Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance, The Vancouver Island Economic Developers Association, and the Island Coastal Economic Trust in the development of an updated a regional economic analysis using 2001-2006 Statistics Canada Census information. The research will provide baseline data that will allow a meaningful comparative analysis of the economy of the region over the past four Census periods, and identify significant changes and trends in the region.

 

Incoming Chairman Russ Hellberg will lead VIEA into its next phase of growth and tackle the business challenges associated with Transportation, Workforce Attraction and Sustainable Energy for Vancouver Island.

 

“2007 was a year of organization and launching initiatives.” Said Russ Hellberg. “With our new dynamic Board, 2008 will be a year of action and new partnerships putting Vancouver Island on the investment and labour force attraction map.”

 

The primary role of the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance is to provide regional leadership for regional business attraction, retention and expansion as well as strategic issues facing the region. VIEA seeks to foster economic growth by promoting a healthy and sustainable economy for the entire Vancouver Island.
