Change is in the air! After sixteen years of a Liberal-led government, Premier Horgan leads an NDP/Green coalition bringing a different approach and a new agenda for BC. What will this mean? Where are we headed? How will this work? Premier Horgan will address delegates gathered at the Summit Dinner October 25th.
Learn more about the tenor of thought and the direction of our new government by attending the 11th annual ‘State of the Island’ Economic Summit, October 25/26 at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre in Nanaimo.
Premier John Horgan is MLA for the new riding of Langford-Juan de Fuca. He was first elected to the Legislature in 2005 as MLA for Juan de Fuca, and has been re-elected three times. In 2014, he became the leader of the BC New Democratic Party, and on July 18, 2017, he became Premier of British Columbia. John is the first to tell you that much of his success in life comes from the faith others had in him — a generous gift he’s committed to giving back to the people of BC.
As a young man, John worked several jobs but the job that made the most impact on him was working at a pulp mill in Ocean Falls. John went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Trent University in Ontario and Sydney University in Australia. A meeting with Tommy Douglas sparked his interest in social democracy and he went on to work for Members of Parliament in Ottawa.
A cancer survivor, John fought hard as an MLA and Official Opposition Leader in the legislature on the issues that matter to people: improving our health care system, fixing the housing crisis, standing up against school cuts and closures, and advocating for better seniors’ care.
As Premier, he’s working to deliver on the NDP government’s priorities: making life more affordable, improving the services people count on, and creating good jobs for people throughout B.C.
