Gain Insight on the BC Economic Plan & InvestBC at the Summit!

Join this session at the 16th annual ‘State of the Island’ Economic Summit to hear from Josie Osborne, Minister of Lands, Waters, and Resource Stewardship on the BC Economic Plan and Leah Nguyen, Chief Investment Officer, InBC as she speaks about the recently launched investment strategy of InBC.

The past two and a half years have been difficult – yet British Columbians pulled together to bring our province through as leaders in economic recovery. Minister Josie Osborne will talk about the StrongerBC Economic Plan, launched earlier this year, to make life better for people today and to help us continue to grow an economy for a future that works for everyone. Osborne will talk about the fundamental shift in how we think about economic development and B.C.’s two big goals: clean and inclusive growth. She will discuss highlights of the plan including work in the areas of mass timber, agri-tech, trade diversification, First Nations economic development, and a generational commitment to continue to develop B.C.’s talent, so people on Vancouver Island and in all parts of B.C. have the skills needed to fill the jobs of tomorrow and to help your businesses grow today.

The investment strategy of InBC is a $500 million impact investment fund with a triple bottom line mandate to invest in funds and ventures that generate financial returns and achieve social, economic and environmental returns in British Columbia. Leah Nguyen will talk about the intended impact of the fund including job creation, advancing reconciliation with Indigenous people, and promoting diversity and inclusion linking to key priorities in the BC Economic Plan. She will also discuss the importance of geographic diversity and how the fund will support Vancouver Island.

Susan Mowbray to Present Key Findings at the 2022 ‘State of the Island’ Economic Summit

Susan Mowbray, partner at MNP, will highlight key findings of the 8th Annual ‘State of the Island’ Economic Report in her presentation at the dinner on October 26 at the Economic Summit.

The report is an annual reading of the condition of Vancouver Island’s economy, a powerful tool widely used by public and private sector decision-makers to help make informed choices. It has been deemed essential reading for anyone serious about business on Vancouver Island.

Recently, VIEA published VI TRENDLINES, a multi-part companion series to the State of the Island Economic Report. Prepared by MNP and funded in part by Island Coastal Economic Trust, the series provided insights on recent population growth, housing, labour and employment and key industries.

For example, did you know the population on Vancouver Island grew by over 89,000 people from 2014 to 2021 To put this into perspective, population growth on Vancouver Island resulted in the addition of enough people to populate a city the size of Nanaimo. As well, the proportion of Islanders over the age of 50 declined from 59% to 35%.

Attend the Summit to learn more about Vancouver Island economic trends and receive your free digital copy (value $195) of this one-of-a-kind Economic Report.

Thank you to MNP for sponsoring this session.

New to the Summit – Summit Forum 22

Networking and Collaboration

October 26, 8:30am to 10:30am

Networking amongst decision-makers is always #1 at the Economic Summit. This year we’re enhancing connection by providing two hours for meeting new leaders, contributing towards planning, exploring opportunities, and investigating funding sources. Engage!

One of these meetings will include a Canada/Mexico Trade Dialogue with a delegation of Ten Mexican companies in agri-food, technologies, construction, manufacturing, mining and recycling.

Juan Navarro, Director, CMX Partnerships, has facilitated this opportunity to build BC/Mexico trade and investment. Come meet these business leaders and explore import/export opportunities.
